Speaking on the recent racist harassment suffered by families of medical workers at a playpark, Marc Mac Seáin as PBP’s Newry & Armagh representative makes the following comment:
“We’re extremely disappointed to hear that families at a play park were harassed on account of their race, to the point of calling the police. Then further harassed with photographs being shared online.
This small minded little Irelander mindset is not just ignorant of our own history & reality as often-migrants but actively harmful to our community. The families harassed provide a vital function to our community working in Daisy Hill Hospital, which struggles under the weight of austerity & managed decline. Intimidation and violence against migrants resulted in the death of Anu Okusanya in Newry only months ago. Migrants can and should be an asset when openly integrated into our society & economy, not treated as an enemy.
Migrants do not make decisions about cutting public services, those are made by our governments at the behest of the same billionaires who in turn push propaganda to divide our communities. They’d have us fight amongst each other for crumbs rather than question the artificial scarcity of resources, and rank economic exploitation of workers every day. They choose their rotating villain of the week between LGBT people, single mothers, travellers, those on benefits, really any disempowered minority who can be scapegoated whilst the broken status quo isn’t questioned.
It’s becoming increasingly common to see outlandish, often bigoted conspiracy theories & disinformation pushed on social media now. A sensational claim made on social media is quite often just that, a claim without backing. It’s no surprise these platforms are controlled by lavishly wealthy & powerful Capitalists such as Elon Musk & Mark Zuckerberg who’ve openly declared the upsetting of the applecart to beam this tripe into every smartphone & do away with any sort of fact-checking or moderation.
We don’t need a racist movement to “close the borders”. Has anyone pushing this “Ireland is Full” line considered the first “border” shut would be the Imperialist partition border dividing the North from the rest of the island? Something Imperialists in Westminster & without salivate at the thought of. Never-mind the rank hypocrisy of our so-called patriots who stand shoulder to shoulder in Belfast with Neo-Nazis, Tommy Robinson supporting fascists & Loyalist paramilitaries, then claim they’ve got the best interests of our people at heart. We need a workers movement to create a Socialist society for the many, not the few.United Against Racism have called counter demonstrations this weekend to far-right demonstrations on Saturday 26th in Dublin & on Sunday 27th in Belfast. Disgracefully, members of our local community have unfortunately been calling on people to attend the far-right demonstrations. I’d encourage anyone capable of travelling to Dublin or Belfast to do so & stand firmly against this hate. People Before Profit remains resolute to punch up & not down.”
