Conor Murphy to be a Strong Voice for Ireland In Strasbourg

Sinn Féin has nominated its Seanad Leader Conor Murphy to be appointed to the Irish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), based in Strasbourg.

PACE, established in 1949, is the oldest international parliamentary assembly comprised of democratically elected representatives. It plays a critical role in upholding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law across its 46 member states.

Seanadóir Murphy’s appointment marks a significant step in ensuring that Ireland — and crucially, the North — has a strong, progressive voice at the heart of European parliamentary dialogue. He brings decades of political experience and a deep commitment to unity, equality, and social justice. His presence will help shape the Council’s work in achieving greater co-operation and common purpose across Europe.

Speaking on his appointment, Seanadóir Murphy said:

“I am honoured to take up this role at such an important time for Ireland and for Europe.

“I will be in Strasbourg next week, and I will be a strong voice for all parts of Ireland in Strasbourg, standing up for democratic values, human rights, and the interests of Irish citizens north and south.”

Murphy’s appointment reflects Sinn Féin’s determination to ensure that Ireland’s voice in all its diversity is heard clearly and confidently on the international stage.
