Workers Party Representative Nicola Grant commented on the recent visit of the Assembly Health Committee to Daisy Hill Hospital. She said while such a visit is welcome, the outcome of the visit is what is paramount. Questions need to be asked and answered.
Will the visit be another smiling photo opportunity ?
Has the committee the will and determination to challenge the proposed changes to the status of Daisy Hill Hospital and the relocation of other services?
Has the committee the power to halt these changes?
The committee is a scrutiny committee and has representatives from all the political parties and a number of them are from the catchment area for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. They will have first hand knowledge and experience of the Poverty, multiple deprivations and health inequalities. They know these proposals will make those appalling conditions much worse and will condemn a future generation of working class families to suffer.
The people of Newry and beyond now need the support of their political representatives, they need to commit to putting patients and services users front and centre of all future policies. It is now time to deliver the policies that were promised during Election Campaigns. It is now time to challenge the vested interests of those championing these proposals for change. It is now time to put the people of Newry first.
