Reopening of Newry Swimming Pool Delayed

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has announced that the ongoing works at Newry swimming pool and Leisure centre will continue for a few more weeks, past the January 2025 deadline.

A spokesperson for NMD Council said:

“Newry, Mourne and Down District Council wishes to advise that the reopening of the swimming pool and health suite at Newry Leisure Centre, which was initially scheduled to take place on a phased approach towards the end of January 2025, has been delayed by a number of weeks.

The decision to delay the reopening has been made to ensure the facilities meet the highest standards in line with all health and safety protocols.

We sincerely apologise for this inconvenience and understand the disappointment this may cause to our valued members, customers, and patrons.

We are pleased to report that we will begin to refill our pools from Monday 20 January. This is a significant process involving the supply of over 1 million litres of water to the pools and health suite over a three-week period. Following this, the Council will carry out essential and rigorous pool safety protocols, which include water quality testing, heating the pools to the required standard temperature and conducting comprehensive staff training to ensure a safe and smooth reopening for everyone.

Our priority is the safety and enjoyment of all users, and the Council is working closely with stakeholders to finalise preparations and bring these facilities back into service.

We will continue to provide updates on our progress. Membership discounted rates will remain in place during this period.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we take these necessary steps.”
