Cllr Bróna Haughey, at October’s Full Council Meeting, welcomed the Presentation from the Executive Office Re: Ending Violence Against Women and Girls
Cllr Haughey said, ‘It’s long awaited and a very welcome step in tackling violence against women and girls.
As a woman, and I am sure some, if not all of the women in this chamber can agree, we face misogyny in the workplace and in society generally far too often and we all know someone whether directly or indirectly who has been affected by violence in the home and we’re all too aware of the 24 women who have sadly died here as a result of violence since 2020.
This is a consequence of systemic gender inequality and must be tackled by challenging that inequality, sexism and misogyny at its roots
For too long, lives have been lost, dreams shattered, and families devastated by this cruel scourge in our society.’
Cllr Haughey also thanked those who support women and girls, organisations such as Women’s Aid that provide support when people are in need of it
Cllr Haughey concluded, ‘I look forward to working together on this framework to realise the meaningful change that our society so badly needs.’
