Newry & Armagh SDLP MLA Justin McNulty has welcomed changes to the North’s personal injury discount rate, and has insisted that this must be reflected in insurance premiums being paid by consumers.
Mr. McNulty has strongly advocated at the Assembly’s Justice Committee for the Justice Minister to use her influence with the Government Actuary Department to bring the North’s discount rate into line with other parts of the UK.
SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said:
“Insurance costs are crippling households across the North, and for far too long, we have been paying above the odds for insurance compared to other parts of these islands.
“I have been working hard to have this inequality addressed, and I am pleased that we have seen movement to bring our rates into line with those in Scotland, England and Wales.
“What we need to see now is a united effort from all parties to ensure that these changes can be translated into lower costs for consumers. Households are buckling under cost of living pressures, and we as political leaders have a responsibility to do all in our power to make life easier for hard pressed workers and families.”
