SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has spoken of the “inspiring leadership” demonstrated by the young people leading the New Ireland Youth Forum, at the launch of their vision statement for the future of the island.
The Shared Island Youth Forum comprises 80 young civic leaders from diverse backgrounds born since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The Forum met 9 times over the last year to deliberate on and agree a statement of their vision and values for the future of the island, across themes of Sustainability, Opportunity, Wellbeing, Culture, and Identity and Equality.
Justin McNulty MLA said:
“The vision statement produced by the Shared Island Youth Forum provides a clear roadmap on how to build a truly reconciled island, and a future where every single person and community has a place and feels at home.
“The work of the Youth Forum should act as a guiding light on how to progress the cause of a new and shared Ireland founded and grounded in the principles of the Good Friday Agreement.
“As political leaders, I firmly believe that we have a responsibility to seize the optimism, hope, and positive ambition set out by the Youth Forum.
“We all have a duty to work towards realising the hopes and ambitions of our young people, so that they can grow old in a New Ireland defined by inclusion, tolerance, and the power of possibility.”
