Feet First Podiatry Spotlight: Understanding Sever’s Disease in Children

By Judith Brown

Hey there, amazing parents and guardians!  Are you noticing your child limping after participating in sports or complaining about heel pain during their growth spurts? It might be more than just the usual aches and pains of an active childhood. Today, we’re shining a light on a common yet often misunderstood condition among youngsters: Sever’s Disease.

Sever’s Disease, scientifically known as Calcaneal Apophysitis, is not actually a disease, but an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel.  It primarily affects active children between the ages of 8 and 14, aligning with the periods of their most intense growth spurts.

So, what exactly is this condition?  As kids hit their growth spurts, the heel bone can develop faster than the surrounding muscles and tendons, leading to tension and stress at the growth plate. Given that this area is still developing, it’s more susceptible to inflammation, which is what we refer to as Sever’s Disease.

Symptoms to watch out for include:
– Pain in the heel, which typically worsens with activity
– Swelling and redness in the heel area
– Difficulty walking, running, or participating in usual activities
– Limping or walking on tiptoes to avoid putting pressure on the heel
