Aontu Welcome Labour Commitment to Repeal Legacy Act

Aontú Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly has welcomed the commitment made today in Westminster that the new Labour Government will repeal the shameful Legacy Act passed by their predecessors that has destroyed the rights of victims and their families to truth and justice.

Speaking today, Mrs Brolly said:

“Aontú as well as every political party in the North have opposed the Legacy Act from its inception.  It is a shameful stain on the British statute book and has plunged many victims and their families in to despair that they will ever see justice.

Our leader Peadar Tóibín TD was instrumental in forcing the Irish Government to take the British Government to the European Court for breaching the Convention on Human Rights.

Whilst we welcome the news today, we will cautiously monitor the publication of any draft legislation in London and work with other stakeholders to ensure that the repeal of the Legacy Act is passed as soon as possible.

We will continue to be steadfast in our defence of truth and justice and the Good Friday Agreement, and we look forward to working with a Labour Government in addressing the legacy of the conflict in the North.”
