Sinn Féin’s Dáire Hughes is advising livestock owners to be aware of changes to the prefix code on livestock tags here in the north for cattle, sheep and goats, required under EU animal health law.
The Newry Armagh candidate said:
“The use of ‘XI’ prefix codes on livestock will become mandatory in January 2025. The new ‘XI’ prefix code tags are now available from tag suppliers. The department is advising during the transition period to tag livestock with the new ‘XI’ tags that are being exported to the EU in the future.”
“The change in prefix code on livestock from ‘UK’ to ‘XI’ ensures the north has unfettered access to both the EU and British markets for livestock and agri-food produce, and ensures strong farm to fork traceability.”
“The change in prefix codes has been brought about as a result of Brexit.”
