A man has appeared in court charged with the false imprisonment of a woman on Sunday afternoon at Gyles Quay in north Louth.
James McDonagh (37) with an address at Dominic Street, Newry appeared before Drogheda District Court accused of the offence and with producing a large silver knife during the course of an aggravated burglary also at Gyles Quay.
He is further charged with the unauthorised use of a car without the owner’s consent and dangerous driving at Gyles Quay on the same date.
The court heard the accused made no reply when arrested and charged.
The Defence barrister Paula Butterly B.L told Judge Eirinn McKiernan that her client was not making any application for bail.
Judge McKiernan adjourned the case, pending the directions of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and remanded the accused in custody to appear before Dundalk District Court.
Newry incident
On the same day an incident took place in Newry City whereby McDonagh, when arrested was charged in connection with a burglary and hit-and-run road traffic collision in Newry on Sunday morning, 23rd June.
Police received a report that a white BMW X5 had been stolen from outside a house in the Dublin Road area of Cloghoge.
A second report followed that two women were struck by the same type of vehicle in the Martins Lane area of Newry city.
As part of cross-border working, the suspect, James McDonagh was arrested by An Garda Síochána in the Dundalk area on Sunday evening. The stolen vehicle was also seized, and will now undergo forensic examination.
