Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has welcomed the publication of final draft NICE guidance recommending use of the drugs Kaftrio, Orkambi and Symkevi for cystic fibrosis.
Under Department of Health policy, Northern Ireland follows NICE guidance on drug availability.
The Minister said: “The newly published final draft NICE guidance will underpin continued access to these life-changing treatments for new and existing patients in Northern Ireland, where treatment is considered clinically appropriate by their treating clinician. I can also confirm agreement has been reached with Vertex, the manufacturer of the drugs, on the terms of their availability in Northern Ireland. This mirrors agreement reached in England.
“There are still necessary formal processes to be completed including the publication of final NICE guidance, which will be reviewed for endorsement in Northern Ireland in the normal way. However, very important progress has undoubtedly been made which I know will be welcomed by patients and families in Northern Ireland.”
