The surge in instances of damp, mold, and condensation within Housing Executive properties across Northern Ireland has been a cause for concern.
During the 2023/24 financial year, a staggering 17,198 reports were registered, marking a notable escalation from the 7,776 reports in 2020/21. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons gave a breakdown of damp reports across each of Northern Ireland’s 11 council areas over the last five years.
The Housing Executive had an influx of over half a million repair requests in the past year, underscoring the magnitude of the issue.
In addressing the concerns, Minister Lyons emphasised that the management of these issues falls within the Housing Executive’s operational domain. Insights shared by the Chief Executive revealed that out of approximately 556,000 repair requests in the recent financial year, 17,198 cited problems related to condensation or damp, constituting 3.1% of all repair requests.
The data, which is available on the Assembly website, shows an incredible trend of the escalating reports of damp, mold, and condensation over the past five years. This upward trajectory signals a critical need for swift intervention and proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of residents throughout Northern Ireland.
