SDLP Opposition Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath has welcomed an Assembly vote rejecting an extension to coronavirus powers.
The SDLP Opposition forced a division on the issue, with a majority voting against an extension.
South Down MLA Mr McGrath said:
“During the coronavirus pandemic we were forced to take quick decisions that severely limited the public’s freedoms in order to protect people and save lives. The powers Ministers were provided with were expansive and only agreed due to recognition of the scale of the emergency we were facing.
“Thankfully, we are no longer in that position. As the acute conditions demanding compelling powers have abated, it is time to stop and reflect on whether or not the Executive should retain those powers. Last month the Assembly passed a £28bn budget over the course of two days – if another emergency arises, and we all pray it doesn’t, the Executive would have ample time to prepare and present fresh legislation providing them with the powers needed to address it.
“We have heard no justification today for the extension of these powers at this time and welcome a vote against them after the SDLP Opposition ensured that a division would take place and MLAs would have the opportunity to clearly state their views on this important issue.”
