Tonight [9th Nov] activists based at Saoradh’s Newry office replaced the Palestinian flag that was stolen from the front of Newry Town Hall the previous day before a number of public events took place in the vicinity.
Upon closer inspection of the flag pole we can now reveal that the original flag was forcibly ripped down as the brass eyelets and bits of material were still attached to the pole.
Speaking from Saoradh’s Newry office the party’s Newry representative Stephen Murney said “Our party members took it upon themselves to replace the stolen flag this evening so the people of Newry can continue to show public solidarity with the Palestinian people suffering under Israeli occupation.
“As our party members left the Town Hall the Crown Forces arrived, decamped from their armoured car and began taking photos of the newly erected flag. The reasons for this are unknown but it clearly shows where their priorities are and furthermore where their resources are being utilised.
“At a time when homes are being broken into across the district, the PSNI instead focus their attention on legitimate political activists replacing a stolen Palestinian flag. This won’t be lost on the victims of crime in the area.”
Murney concluded “Saoradh will continue to actively support the besieged people of Gaza and the Palestinian Resistance.”
