Palestinian Flag Removed in Newry

The Revolutionary Socialist Republican Party, Saoradh, has raised concerns regarding the removal of a Palestinian flag from the front of Newry Town Hall.

The flag had been in place for several weeks to show solidarity with the Palestinian people who are currently being slaughtered in a genocidal campaign by Israel.

On Wednesday [8th Nov] it was brought to Saoradh’s attention that the flag had been removed.

Speaking from Saoradh’s Newry office the local craobh Chairperson Cliodhna McCool said “The people of Newry have shown great support to the people of Palestine in recent weeks. Rallies have been held, whiteline pickets have been organised, posters have been pasted and anyone taking a quick drive through working class areas of the town will see Palestinian flags flying from homes and flag poles in displays of solidarity.

“One such flag was erected across from Newry Town Hall several weeks ago and held a prominent position in the centre of town. Today it is gone.

“It’s no coincidence that a number of public events took place in the vicinity today that would have had people in attendance and also the media.

“However this is no reason to remove a flag that was erected to show solidarity with the 10,000 plus people, including over 4,000 children, who have been killed.”

Cliodhna continued “It would seem that someone, or some agency, were embarrassed enough to take this action in case members of the public, the media, or some dignitaries from afar seen this display of public support for Palestine.

“Questions need to be answered including:

*Was it removed by an individual or a statutory agency?

*Why was it removed?

*Will those who removed it put it back up?
