A 14-year-old schoolboy has appeared in court accused of trying to kill a child he allegedly sexually assaulted.
Appearing at Newry Youth Court by videolink from the Juvenile Justice Centre, the defendant, who cannot be identified because of his age, was charged with four offences arising from an alleged incident on September 16 this year.
The teenager is charged with two counts of sexually assaulting a child under 13, attempting to murder her and with non-fatal strangulation by “putting your arm around her neck, amounting to battery of another and that you intended to affect her ability to breathe or the flow of blood to her brain or that you were reckless as to whether this act would affect her ability to breathe or the flow of blood to her brain.”
A prosecuting lawyer said the full file is due to be received by the PPS by the end of the month so she was asking for a four week remand.
Defence solicitor Ciaran Downey suggested the case could be out back to October 20 as he intended to lodge an application for bail and that was granted by District Judge Eamon King.
