The SDLP have stated that the vision of a world-class 15-acre city park for Newry has moved one step closer to becoming a reality. It comes as Newry Mourne and Down District Council released the concept designs and a fly through animation which brings the layout and vision to life.
Welcoming this latest positive step, Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has spoken of his excitement upon getting a first glimpse at the concept design. “At long last for the first time, the people of Newry and surrounding areas get to see what exactly we can expect in our long-awaited park. I was delighted to see the proposed imaginative mix of inclusive active play areas, outdoor event spaces, green areas, woodland and in particular the inclusion of a sensory garden which will be a very welcome resource for local families and young people who are living with Autism.”
“From day one, the SDLP has championed the park and have fought hard to ensure an onward cross-border link is adopted into the design. I am therefore also delighted to see that links to the Greenway and Victoria Lock will be simultaneously upgraded for pedestrians, dog walkers and cyclists alike.”
“The people have been heard loud and clear”.
His SDLP colleague Councillor Michael Savage also paid tribute to the many campaigners who encouraged the public to make their voice heard in the consultation process which allowed everyone the opportunity to have their say on what they would like to see in their park. “After fighting hard on council to ensure a public consultation was held, I was inspired to see the thousands of responses that the people of our district submitted to have their voices heard loudly on key design aspects”.
“Victory to the Skaters”.
SDLP Cllr Doire Finn has expressed her particular relief for Urban Sports. “I am delighted that after a long and hard-fought campaign by the Urban Sports Enthusiasts of our district, I am really pleased that at last they will have a safe, inclusive, and modern facility to use in the heart of our city. The SDLP have progressed the 15-acre park at the Albert Basin through every stage in council and will continue to champion the project until its exciting and long-awaited completion”.
