McNulty Welcomes Appointment of New Housing Executive Contractors

SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has welcomed the appointment of new Housing Executive contractors. 

New contractors have been appointed to carry out £250m of maintenance and repair work.

Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said:

“These new contracts will be a relief to thousands of Housing Executive tenants across the North who have been left waiting for much needed repairs due to the ending of the previous maintenance contracts. It’s important that we see work get underway as quickly as possible so that we can begin to clear the backlog that has been created.

“During this process I have heard from a number of constituents who have been left waiting, concerned that their homes are simply not fit for purpose. Our homes are fundamental to our health and wellbeing and those that are poorly maintained with problems like damp and mould have a detrimental impact on tenants.

“While the appointment of new contractors is welcome it’s concerning that fewer properties are being built than planned this year due to budget cuts. There are thousands of families across the North on housing waiting lists and unless we build new homes we will never get to grips with this issue. The lack of an Executive at Stormont is directly contributing to these issues and the SDLP Opposition team will continue to make access to good quality social and affordable housing a key part of our agenda for change.”
