Aontú Leader Peadar Tóibín TD has called on all Dáil parties and independents to support the party’s European Convention on Human Rights (Challenge to British Government Amnesty) Bill following the completion of the British Parliaments passage of the controversial Legacy Bill today.
The Meath West TD said: “Despite huge opposition on this island for the proposals by the Tory Government in Britain to push through their despicable amnesty, today the London Parliament voted to enshrine the shameful Bill in law. We have called on the Irish Government, as a co-guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement, to stand up for all victims and back our Bill to force them to take the British Government to court over this legislation which passed its First Stage in the Dáil before the summer recess”.
Deputy Tóibín continued: “Victims, their representatives and support organisations across the island have resolutely determined that this unilateral attempt to brush heinous crimes under the carpet will not wash and the only avenue now left to defend them is for the Government to take the kid gloves off”.
“Our Bill has passed first stage in the Dáil. We need TDs across the political divide to help initiate its Second Stage immediately. Other parties have now supported our position that court is the only option left open to those of us who want to defend real justice for victims. I hope that we can show unity of purpose on this most serious of issues and that Ministers will listen to the clear message being sent over the actions of their counterparts in London that will affect so many Irish citizens”, concluded Tóibín.
