Sinn Féin councillor Cathal King has welcomed a commitment from DFI to come before council to discuss the plans for a fixed bridge as part of the Southern Relief Road.
The Newry City councillor said:
“I’m pleased to hear that DFI have accepted a Sinn Féin request to come before council, to give a clear update on the Southern Relief Road and take questions from members on the project.
“The latest response from DFI on their decision to use a fixed bridge for the Southern Relief road was extremely disappointing, so we welcome this opportunity to question them on the project, funding opportunities and how we can work to fully harness the tourism potential of Newry and its historic waterways.
“Sinn Féin has consistently campaigned for a lifting bridge, with my colleague, Liz Kimmins MLA raising the issue many times in the Assembly.
“We want the project to help fully develop the tourism potential of Newry and its historic waterways as part of the overall regeneration plan.
