Statement by IRPWA
Internment has been a tool used by the British occupier to imprison Irish Republicans for as long as British Rule has been opposed. Internment is just another name for administrative detention, a tactic used by Imperialist regimes across the world.
In recent years the tactic most used has been internment by remand, this involves holding Republican Prisoners for extended periods without the granting of bail. This has witnessed Republican Prisoners being held for a number of years without facing trial and often ends with charges dropped or cases falling apart.
Speaking on the issue former Republican Prisoner Stephen Murney explained “To highlight this policy local activists from the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association [IRPWA], including former Republican Prisoners, have erected a number of boards in Ray McCreesh Park and Derrybeg highlighting ongoing internment.
“Currently we are seeing this tactic being deployed more than ever before.
“At the current time Republican Prisoners in Maghaberry, Hydebank and Portlaoise on remand have amassed over 11,000 days, and counting, between them while being denied bail. Despite numerous bail applications the British Courts continue to ignore the fact that remand is being used as a means to keep Republicans from their homes and communities.”
Murney continued “We have also witnessed a sharp increase in refusal of compassionate bail. Many of those on remand for a number of years have been refused short term bail to be home with their families at the time of huge life events. They have missed births ,marriages and even the passing of their loved ones.
“All this comes on the back of an increase in the number of loyalists being granted bail at a whim. Over the last number of years we have witnessed loyalists being granted bail after being caught in possession of guns, drugs as well as other serious offences.
“The overwhelming evidence points to MI5 controlling the judiciary when it comes to Republican Prisoners.
“This blatant breach of human rights must be challenged.”
Stephen concluded “The IRPWA call on all Republicans and those who care about human rights to join with us in calling for an end to the Internment of Irish Republicans immediately.”
