SDLP Health Spokesperson and Chair of the Assembly All Party Group on Youth Participation Colin McGrath MLA has welcomed the publication of the Children’s Social Care Services Review report and has offered his support to the central recommendations.
Colin McGrath MLA said:
“This report is the result of extensive and intensive engagement with children, young people and all those involved in delivering social care. Professor Jones and his team have prepared a roadmap for change that we cannot afford to ignore. I want to thank them for their diligent work over the last year and the comprehensive recommendations they’ve produced.
“It is a scandal that there are 4000 children waiting on assessment and support from social care services. Some of these children will wait for more than two years for the support they need. Meanwhile, social care staff are working to exhaustion trying to help as many children as they can while swimming in bureaucracy.
“The review’s recommendation of a single regional children’s social care service is exactly the kind of bold system-wide change that we need to deliver better results for people. The SDLP supports the recommendations and will work with all other parties to see them delivered.
“The hard truth is that without Executive Ministers, this important piece of work will not be implemented. Anything less than the immediate restoration of government is a wilful failure of children and young people.”
