Unite Community Newry have slammed the Southern Trust for stripping vital health services from Daisy Hill Hospital. The Newry based group has called out politicians for sitting on their hands while Daisy Hill has been destroyed from within.
Martin McKeown , Newry Unite Community Chairperson has condemned the Southern Trust:
“ We hate to say we told you so, but we did, I personally was interviewed by the BBC at the front doors of Daisy Hill and told the World this was in the offing; Daisy Hill Hospital was being stripped, and destroyed from within by the Trust. Our members could see what was going on, their warnings were ignored and we were accused of scaremongering!”
Martin continues “ this is the true face of Bengoa, this is what centralising health services looks like, it’s cold and brutal. On Friday Morning I was contacted by a nurse who has given her best years to Daisy Hill Hospital and the people of Newry, this lady was distraught, she was told she has six weeks in her current role. Just like that, one stroke of an autocrats pen and this woman’s life has been turned upside down. Two extra hours a day of travel time have been added onto her long shift, not to mention the added costs, she is one of many and yet they wonder why health workers are leaving in droves!”
“ our politicians have sat on their hands on this. There has been no political will to save Daisy Hill. They have all signed up to Bengoa. If they really cared, they would be calling for mass mobilisation to protect our hospital, their silence is deafening!”
Martin continues “ people are going to die, I’m not scaremongering, this is the reality, and these people are not going to be strangers, they’re going to be family, friends and neighbours; future generations will not look kindly on those who let this happen!”
