Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has raised concerns with the Parades Commission over the possibility of huge disruption in Newry City Centre on Tuesday 12th July due to a number of planned Orange Order parades throughout the day.
The Newry & Armagh MLA said:
“I have raised concerns with the Parades Commission on the possibility of huge disruption during an Orange Order parade in Newry on Tuesday.
“Local businesses are rightly concerned that workers and customers may struggle to access their premises due to road closures and traffic delays.
“There are also concerns over access to and from homes along the route and for emergency services to the city, if and when they are needed.
“Due to the very high numbers of people expected to attend, we have further expressed concerns on the management of the event in terms of crowd control and countering any potential anti-social behaviour.
“It is the responsibility of the PSNI and organisers to ensure this event is managed effectively to avoid any issues.
“It is disappointing that organisers have not been in regular consultation with the community and businesses in relation to this parade. Going forward it’s essential that parade organisers fully engage with local people and businesses to ensure they are fully informed on how organisers intend to manage parades and cause the least possible disruption.”
