Social Democratic and Labour Party Sport Spokesperson Justin McNulty MLA has called on Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey to engage with Irish Rugby urgently.
Mr McNulty said that the list of letter signatories to the Irish Government Ministers is a who’s who of Ireland women’s players from over the last decade including Grand Slam winners and World Cup semi-finalists who are expressing solidarity with the current generation of players many of whose names are on the list.
Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said:
“The fact that so many stalwarts of the sport have publicly added their names to a letter conveying a loss of trust and confidence in their union to the Minister is cause for concern.
“I am calling on Minister Hargey to meet with the IRFU without delay in an effort to have the issues the players’ raised addressed promptly.
“It is inconceivable that in the year 2021 such an esteemed group of players who have sacrificed so much for the green jersey over so many years are in a place where they feel deeply discouraged and like second class citizens in the sport they love.
“I know the players will not have taken the decision to go public with their dissatisfaction lightly. This bold initiative by so many key names in the sport may be a necessary catalyst for positive change. The IRFU must be challenged to provide the relevant supports and funding to implement high ambition strategic plans so the game can grow allowing all players from grass roots to green jerseys to flourish and thrive in an organised, safe and positive high performance environment.”
