Local Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd, has warmly welcomed news this afternoon that €1m in funding has been secured to assist the development of the long awaited Newgrange Hospice Unit in Drogheda.
O’Dowd said “This money today is a real boost for the project which is incredibly important to the Drogheda area and in fact the wider north east region. This funding is part of a €10 million national fund for palliative and end-of-life care announced today by the Minister for Health.
“This project when completed will finally give people a designated unit where they can spend their final days in comfort with their families and with appropriate supports in place. The care and dignity of a dying person and their family is so vitally important in our society.
“I met last week with the Minister for Health, HSE representatives and other colleagues to urge that funding be ring fenced for this long awaited unit.
O’Dowd added “The programme for government committed to advancing plans for an end of life unit in Drogheda and I’m delighted the government are now following through on this commitment.”
