A public rally is to be held on the 23rd October at Marcus Square, Hill Street in Newry in support of a 15 acre City Centre park at the Albert Basin site in Newry City. Coming at a time when Newry, Mourne and Down District Council as well as local Councillors have been criticised for dragging their heels.
Recent votes in Council to deny directing funding from a proposed new civic centre to a badly needed City Centre park have been met with discontent from the Newry public. This outrage has prompted local union reps from Unite the Union and Unite the Community to take action and send a strong message back to Council.
Speaking on the rally Unite Newry Community co-ordinator Martin McKeown said:
“Time for talking is over, the people have had enough. The people want the park. The people will not be denied. Build the park!”
Meet up for the rally will be at 3pm October 23rd at Marcus square, Hill Street, Newry.
