Magennis Welcomes Rural Roads Investment

Slieve Gullion Sinn Féin Councillor, Oonagh Magennis, has warmly welcomed news that the DFI Minister Nichola Mallon has committed to set up a ‘roads recovery fund’ for 2021-22 which would prioritise the maintenance of rural roads.

Slieve Gullion Councillors have frequently requested that more funding is provided for rural roads in the south Armagh area, an area where some of the extremely rural roads are bordering on impassable without vehicle damage.

Minister Mallon outlined her intentions in response to a question from Sinn Féin during Question Time this week.

Councillor Magennis continued “It is very welcome news that the DFI Minister has confirmed that in finalising her 2021-22 Budget, that she is committed to setting up a ‘roads recovery fund’ to improve rural infrastructure and help local communities.”

“We also got assurances from Minister Mallon that her officials have undertaken to implement the recommendations of the 2019 Audit Office report and that she will update the executive on its progress. Local Councillors are liaising with local DFI Section Offices on a regular basis and realise they are doing their best to get improved infrastructure in rural areas.

Councillor Magennis understands and acknowledges the frustration of residents with the current state of rural roads and hopefully with the commitment from Minister Mallon to a renewed ‘Roads Recovery Fund’ that some improvements to our local road network will happen soon.
