Scenes in Meigh Village Condemned

Videos have been circulating via social media of disturbing scenes in Meigh village last night of what is allegedly a car driving dangerously on the Railway road area of the village.

Speaking on the incident Sinn Fein MLA Liz Kimmins said:

“Sinn Fein representatives have been liaising with PSNI all morning in relation to the disgraceful scenes on the Railway Road in Meigh overnight. One arrest has been made and police are continuing to investigate the details of a number of videos that have been circulating on social media.

A number of people were injured during the incidents and the terrible scenes have left local residents terrified in their own homes. This is totally unacceptable and must stop now. We are very lucky someone wasn’t killed as a result of this reckless behaviour.

The Meigh Community should not have to put up with this week in week out, and we will continue to do all we can to put a stop to it”

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty continued the outrage by stating:

“Disturbing videos being shared on social from Meigh last night. Young people’s lives have been impacted most during this pandemic and I have huge sympathy for the frustration they are experiencing. However, dangerous and reckless or antisocial behaviour is not acceptable. Meigh residents are angry and are adamant this type of disturbance and activity must stop now.”

I pray that those who have been injured can make a fully and speedy recovery and I will continue to liaise with Police and residents. The community in Meigh should not and will not put up with this behaviour, be assured your SDLP team are dedicated to bringing this behaviour to a permanent end and will continue to fight to protect the entire community. Everyone has the right to live in peace.”

Police enquiries are ongoing however there has been widespread condemnation across the political and community spectrum.

Independent Newry City Councillor Gavin Malone said via social media:

“This morning I was contacted by residents of the village of Meigh to inform me of horrific anti social activity which occurred last night. A young woman was driving a car dangerously and out of control and knocked down 3 individuals.

The local community completely condemn this behaviour and wish to prevent similar activity in the future in an effort to protect the youth of their village.

I will email the relevant Director in the Council to ask them to instruct the District Electoral Area Co-Ordinator to convene a meeting with the residents of Meigh and all other relevant Statutory Agencies to discuss this very serious matter and to develop an Anti Social Behaviour Action Plan to prevent similar activities in the future.

My thoughts and sympathies go to the individuals who were knocked down and I wish them a speedy recovery.”
